Migration Tracking
Shot this @ a lake near Somnathpur. Only during processing i noticed a ring on the neck of the bird @ bottom left. Is this for tracking the migration, it would be great if experts share some knowledge on this method.

Seems like a Chinese ringing project - Yellow is not mentioned here

But I sent out a mail to one of the people on that list with a link to this image.

Hi Niranjan, Could you please get in touch with Gopisundar - email below.

Hi Shyamal,

The banded bar-headed goose was in a batch marked in Hovsgol Mongolia this year by Martin Gilbert of WCS. Do you have Niranjan's email? I wanted to get more details of the site, date etc. His email is not up on the list. Thanks for the link.

Gopi.

Gopi has got in touch with Martin Gilbert (martin.gilbert at wcs. org) and has obtained the following information (minus the attachments showing Google Earth direct line from banding site to resighting)

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Judging from the photo, the bird is a male tagged with the collar E6. He was caught on 19 July 2007 in the Darkhad Valley in the northern Mongolian aimag of Hovsgol (N: 99.41078, E: 51.19736). He was one of 50 Bar-headed Geese we fitted with collars in July, and is the first for which we have received resighting information. Based on the information given, the bird has travelled a direct line distance of ~4,780 km!

I am attaching a couple of images that might be of interest to the photographer including one of the bird himself at capture, a map indicating the area of capture, and direct line track between the two. I'd be grateful if you could pass them onto him and am also including a GAINS factsheet for general information.

Martin Gilbert has shared the photograph (with permission) of the same Goose in Mongolia at the time of ringing. I have uploaded it here on behalf of Gopi Sundar who has obtained explicit permission from Martin.

This picture was featured in the New YorK times of Jan 29, 2008. I am bringing the paper to give it to you, Niranjan. Unfortunately, you are not mentioned by name in the article, only as "a chap"! and in the picture credit your name is wrongly spelt.
