Please excuse for the Image Quality.... but this
species is rarely being photographed or reported
in India,
hence sharing it with you all. Like the Barred
Buttonquail, this is also not a true quail with
female being more colourful and
polyandrous.....it
has a funny sounding scientific name too :-)
Buttonquails resemble, but are unrelated to the
true quails. They are small, cryptically
coloured,
ground dwelling birds. The female is more
brightly
coloured than the male and initiates courtship.
The interesting thing is the “Role Reversal”
trait
in this species. The female exhibits polyandry
and
keep circulating among several males and
fighting
off rival females from her territory. She also
offers food to the maes during courtship ritual
